Benefits and Barriers

What are the benefits and barriers of nursing informatics?

The benefits of Nursing Informatics can include the following:

  • Modern medical devices improve the ability to collect electronic patient data and transmit them for analysis. The advent of wearable technology such as smartwatches from Apple and Samsung are helping to save lives by sharing patient data with their practitioners (Reeder & David, 2016).
  • Preliminary analysis of electronic patient data can be done by computer algorithms to assist clinicians in making patient care decisions (Pollettini et al., 2012).
  • Nursing informatics improves healthcare application design by encouraging medical device and application interfaces to be nursing focused.
  • Data can be used and translated into different languages for international applications.

The barriers of Nursing Informatics include:

  • Securing electronic data must always be a primary concern. Once data is collected it can be used to identify patients if not properly protected.
  • Who owns the data and is responsible for keeping it safe? Does the patient own their data or the facility that collects and stores it?
  • Who is responsible for the hardware platforms that manage data collected through the nursing informatics process? In environments that are heavily dependent upon connected devices, what happens when the power goes out? What happens when a device fails?
  • How to protect against international hacking.
  • When new systems are implemented, training must be involved. Some new systems can be very complicated and foreign to those users who may be used to the old paper processes.
