Impact on Nursing

What are two examples of how Nursing Informatics has impacted your future practice as a DNP leader?

Nursing Informatics plays a critical role in DNP leadership because it serves as a foundation for research in the growth of the nursing practice. Each day in the clinical setting information is collected about patients, but how that information is used is how I utilize nursing informatics. One example is the use of patient telemetry and vital sign data to monitor for septic conditions. Using an algorithm developed by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, a computer can alert nursing staff if a patient is entering into a septic condition (Amland & Hahn-Cover, 2016). Data collected by this process can then be used to improve patient mortality rates related to sepsis.

Another example of using nursing informatics as a DNP leader is to analyze patient mortality rates and to inquire if there is a significant impact by nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. In the past, this would have been a very time-consuming process, but today this relationship can be closely analyzed to discover if there is a significant impactful relationship. Research has shown that proper staffing reduces nursing errors and improves the morale of the staff (Jansson, Syrjälä, & Ala-Kokko, 2019). Nursing informatics has the ability to combine resources and expertise from multiple fields of study to create a unified solution.
